The Electoral Commission has just announced seven best losers:
- Marie Josique Radegonde / No 14 / Alliance du Coeur
- Raffick Sorefan / No 15 / Alliance du Coeur
- Aurore Perrault / No 4 / Alliance de l’Avenir
- Michael Sik Yuen / No 17 / Alliance de l’Avenir
- Reza Issac / No 19 / Alliance de l’Avenir
- Stéphanie Anquetil / No 16 / Alliance de l’Avenir
- Jean Francisco François / No 21 / OPR
So here is the final composition of the National Assembly:
- Alliance de l’Avenir: 41 + 4 = 45
- Alliance du Coeur = 18 + 2 = 20
- Mouvement Rodriguais = 2
- Organisation du Peuple Rodriguais = 1
- Front Solidarité Mauricien = 1
(PS: I’m a die-hard Liverpool fan and I couldn’t resist.)

C’est Cehl que j’aime
Good job Cehl. He believes in his struggle and did a very good score.
Si Cehl Meeah, FSM ti met ene candidat sino-mauricien, li ti pou best loser la….
Ayo Paul fine gagn shock la… fine gagn 3 deputers madames bbr dans no4… Ashok pas best loser( mo bien content)…
thanks god we got rid of the ex athorney
To Vishesh,
You are right. I have lived in the PVerte for 20 yrs (well first twenty) until yr 2000 and i can tell u that as a youngster i have always followed the ‘meechings’ of Cehl.
Many people in Mauritius do not know about his real struggle and much of it has been in the past ‘overdone’ by the press. His struggle has never been targeted towards other communities in particular bt towards his own community where he tried to make people realise of the problems ravaging the no3 constittuency (including valee pitot) – drugs, unemployment, sous-developments and more important the struggle against ignorance…
As you might realise today, the big losers are the MMM in this and the section of the press and a big section of the Muslim community itself who had vehicled all sorts of bad things on him in the past (such as extremist, insulting prophet etc) had clear vested interests. Of course he is far from perfect. He has made many many mistakes in the past like for instance being unsure whether he wants to preach Islam or do politics etc, and sometimes ‘deraper’ in his speeches of religious tenure. But you imagine he was 30 yrs old when he entered the scene and if today PTr has been able to elect people over there, its becoz Cehl has bombed the very foundations of the MMM over there.
Many people do not know anything abt PVerte other than what they read in the press. To know the reality there you need live other there and know the context. As someone from that No3, im proud to see the way how people have voted. It sends a clear message to all 3 elected persons – either you get to work or all of you ‘leve paké aller’ next time. All 3 of No 3 have never been elected before over there. They have got the signal that they are on ejectable chairs.
If you look at how the votes went – rural areas voted mostly for PTr and as such mostly Hindus voting for a Hindu Prime Minister. The General Population voted more for General Population candidates and for a GP prime misister of MMM in 1, 4, 17, 20 , 19. But number 3 voted for the Hindu Prime Minister, the GP aspiring prime minister, and one local leader of the circonscription 3.
Thanks.

Instead of this system based on community, we need one just based on proportional representation. BTW did Sik Yuen register as a candidate of General Population?
@Bruno
Who knows? Maybe Micheal Sik Yuen didn’t register as a Sino-Mauritian… If you look at Le Defi Media’s list, you’ll notice that neither him nor Aline Wong appear in it. So, perhaps, he registered as a member of the General Population.
According to the Mauritian Constitution,
The intriguing part here is, of course, “from his way of life”. I have some difficulty interpreting that…

Do you fast like Hindus? Do you fast like Muslims? How often do you go to the Mosque? Do you light up incense at the Pagoda every morning? Do you pray to dolls/statues?
That’s the way of life. And if you don’t do what certain communities do, you belong to the General Population. And this suits Resistans ek Alternativs. E.g. If you’re a liberal who happens to be an atheist and who engage into fornication and take a piss at traditional values, you belong to the General Population.
The above is my understanding of “way of life.”
The National Assembly has 70 members.
3/4 of that is 52.3 i.e. 53.
L’Alliance de l’Avenir has 45 members and (in the very best case for them) can count on the votes of the Mouvement Rodriguais, the Organisation du Peuple Rodriguais and Cehl Meeah (5 in all), so that’s 50.
50 is, of course, less than 53 meaning that Navin Ramgoolam, if he wants to change the constitution and make a 2nd Republic, will either have to
* propose consensual changes (so that some Alliance du Coeur members vote for then)
* or wait a few years (?) for some subtle “migrations”
Mo penC nous system electoral ti revolutionaire en son temps, kot system best loser ti p kav progete zot differents parti population. Akoz ti ena ban vrai differences a lepok. Mo gagne limpression nous ban ancete ti ban inovateurs et ti p sey truve ban vrai solutions a ban vrai problems. Mais nous, de nos zours nous sis suive et “communote” nepli ena so place.
Manier ban circonscirption decouP osi mo truV ti bizin revoir. Ena dimoune so vot dan 1 circonscription vo 3 dioune dan 1 lot. “Everyone is equal but some are more equal” ?
C’est la population ki bizin deman sa. Parti kin gagner pa pou change 1 system kin fer li rentre au pouvoir.
I did a small mistake in my calculation. In fact:
The National Assembly now has 69 members.
3/4 of that is 51.75 i.e. 52.
L’Alliance de l’Avenir has 45 members and (in the very best case for them) can count on the votes of the Mouvement Rodriguais, the Organisation du Peuple Rodriguais and Cehl Meeah (5 in all), so that’s 50.
So they need 2 Alliance du Coeur members to vote for them to attain 3/4.
I also think the Best Loser System has proven itself in the past to create more stability but I don’t thk we still need it today.
I believe we are just creating more division and make people think in terms of the community they are voting first of all. we still hear people saying we need to vote for this guy as he is a Muslim or Hindu. People will say at least give him a vote he will represent us. But this is such a false discourse. After the elections you wont ever see those guys in the region they represent.
They get elected on the basis of their ethnicity..i would say some are very lucky indeed as they are not good enough but just get through because of this system.

@ Avinash,
I sometimes hear 2/3 majority and sometimes 3/4 majority. With MR, the govt has 2/3 majority
