Religion and Politics

2 May 2010 1,785 views 20 Comments By selven

I  have been doing a small stroll around numbr 13 today, since almost everyone is off to the meetings. I supposed it would be fun to look around for weird things I might come across. (Actually I was more lurking around to catch people bribing others to come to meetings etc, unfortunately didn’t catch any [or did I wake up too late today?] ).

Anyway, I was riding around Riambel when I saw something which got me totally annoyed, but also mostly surprised and I could have even bumped into a bus in front of me. I stopped immediately and took a picture…

Where's respect?

I’d say, priceless, and leaves little room to comment, the pic says it all.

This is seriously outrageous, there should be at least some respect to people’s religion, you don’t just go around and mix politics with religion to that extent!!! Well, am not accusing any political party for that, I haven’t seen who did this. He/she needs to learn about respecting religion. Religion should be kept out of politics and vice versa. For sure it’s not candidates who did that but some crazy partisan(s.) But, at least, leaders should let their pawns learn about respect.

PS: The campaign has become more aggressive here, random change of sides lately… Money? Or change of heart?

    wow.
    I am actually genuinely shocked at this picture. It obviously plays more against them than for them..it is quite stupid imo.

    Agreed. It’s stupid. But what do we expect with the kind of “bases” and agents that we have now?

  • citizen_kane said:

    I agree, they are paid and always try to show to their “boss” that they are well worth it. But clearly they aren`t…at least in this case. Any religious individual will be outraged at the sight of this huge display of disrespect. I understand what message they are trying to deliver, but it will fail, we are in 2010 and this will play against their party.
    Still, very unfortunately, religion plays a big part in politics, specially in rural areas.
    Population segmentation is a reality, some will claim that they represent some “arc-en-ciel” but fact of the matter remains, both dominating political parties, practices such segmentation which divides the population. I am hopeful tho, I never perceived Navin Ramgoolam or Paul Berenger as people who genuinely hate x or y religion BUT I do believe they do what they do because it is what it takes, using religion in politics has been working since many years in the country and it will stop the day the population decides so.Then they`ll move to something else, hopefully more critical issues. Like I said, I`m hopeful and trust the youth here.

    Is this a public place? If it’s private I don’t think it should be exposed like that … BTW I’d be angry if I saw n00bs covering crucifixes with purple or bleu-blanc-rouge … some people are different I guess.

    Je me demande si on est bien à l’ile Maurice….Comment peut-on faire de la religion un partenaire de la politique????C’est une honte cette photo, une honte!!!Pas de respect pour la religion!!!Ici c’est en l’occurence un lieu de prière pour les hindous, mais peu importe!!!Si demain c’était dans un mosqué, une église, un kovil…j’aurai la même sensation de dégoût de voir à quel point l’homme mauricien, pour ne pas dire l’homme A2A puisse se rabaisser!!!
    C’est une honte pour toute la communauté hindoue de l’ile!!!Drapés aux couleurs de l’A2A des divinités hindoues, c’est un manque de respect total!!!Il est grand temps que la population puisse réagir et dire STOP à tous les largesses des sympathisants de l’A2A et de ses candidats!!!
    Après s’être accaparé des activistes dégoutants du VOH, qui se croient être des SUPERFLICS, l’A2A est en train de creuser leur propre tombe!!!!
    J’espère que les MAURICIENS réagissent et sanctionnent ces fous furieux de l’alliance de l’avenir!!

    @Parama Arasen

    Personellement, je pense que ceux qui ont fait cela sont stupides. Mais pas parcequ’ils ne respectent pas la religion (je suis athée et, donc, la religion et moi, ça fait deux… ) mais parcequ’ils croient que cela aura un impact politique (mais bon, qui sait?) De toute façon, ceux qui ont fait cela pensait surement bien faire… Mais comme je l’ai dit plus haut, nos partis politiques donnent bien trop d’importance aux agents, majoritairement incultes à mon avis.

    It’s fools like this that make us more and more divided in the country… trying to emphasize our religious differences instead of making us all understand that we have so much in common and should be proud of it.

    Ban ti l’esprit net! Obviously there is a message to that but the generation has changed and the politicians and their agents should be realize that!

    …………whomever was behind this disgraceful act should be arrested for a potential breach of public order. Is the implication of this act that voting for Le BBR is a vote for Hindu hegemony, or that Hindu dieties support Le BBR?

  • Melt said:

    Anyone that tries to affiliate his/her religion with any of the Mauritian political parties is commiting blasphemy in every sense of the word.

  • avinash said:

    @Melt

    Personally, I find this stupid. I don’t think the one who did that thought about the negative message being sent. In some ways, this looks like http://www.noulakaz.net/weblog/2008/06/30/political-illiterates-in-quatre-bornes/
